Purpose

The purpose of this assignment was to demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of and critical thinking about library and information centers and to practice communication skills. I was tasked with developing the content portion of a webinar on a topic in library and information studies. I chose the Ethical Preservation of Twitter Posts. The goal was to create a webinar a LIS professional could learn something from.

The webinar I created explains the impact and potential of Twitter post preservation for archival repositories. I discuss why it’s important to preserve tweets to be included in our digital repositories as archivists, as well as the appropriate technology for the preservation of social media via cloud-based preservation software. The webinar analyzes issues related to the impact of technology on information ethics and policy regarding the ethical ramifications of the preservation of Twitter posts regarding the cultural and historical significance of one’s community/repository. In a preservation sense, access to one’s innermost thoughts, or personal feed via social media, can serve as a historical document of important events in history and a way to gather the community’s thoughts and feelings regarding historic events that can assist in telling a story in an archive’s collection. This is why I focused on this topic for my webinar.

Analysis

For this assignment, gathering the sources for this assignment was done over several courses of my MLIS degree program, as I am interested in digital preservation. I had an idea of what I wanted to make my webinar about and was well-prepared to create this webinar.

From this experience I learned that the Library of Congress and different universities used cloud-based software to preserve social media posts, and other repositories can use this new technology to do the same.

Reflection

This assignment assisted me in staying abreast of new and emerging technology for repositories. I focused on thinking outside of the box and looking ahead to the changing landscape of information services as technology advances and our worlds change.

I hope to be able to implement this preservation practice or cloud-based software at my repository in my future archivist career and use real-world applications to assist in updating technologies.

This Webinar was for Capstone, MLIS 7800, Summer 2023 Semester.
